Robert/Bob Napper

Robert “Bob” Napper was about 31 years old in 1827, born c. 1796. Robert was appraised in December, 1827, $500.00. Robert was devised by Margaret Reed’s will to her niece, Margaret Cunningham (Burns) Gambill, daughter of Reed’s sister, Isabella (Cunningham) Burns and Robert Burns, and wife of Henry Gambill. They lived in Rockingham County, Virginia. Sue and Nancy Napper were also devised to Margaret Cunningham (Burns) Gambill.

Robert Napper was a shoemaker and was often hired to work for Matt Truss, a free African-American man living and working in Staunton and husband of Betsy Truss, an enslaved female of Margaret Reed.
