John Howe Peyton's Montgomery Hall

Grace

Grace was living in Staunton and was about 68 years old in 1827, born c.1759. Grace was appraised and declared as having no monetary value in December, 1827 following the death of Margaret Cunningham Reed. Grace and Nelson were devised by Reed’s will to her niece, Margaret Elizabeth (Smith) Garber, daughter of Margaret Reed’s sister, Elizabeth (Cunningham) Smith and Thomas Smith, and wife of Michael Garber. Grace and Nelson were devised to Margaret Garber during her lifetime and after her death to Garber’s daughter, Margaret Reed Garber. Margaret and Michael Garber lived in Augusta County, Virginia. In a memorandum separate from her will, Margaret Reed directed her executors to distribute specific articles of clothing, household items, furniture, and other personal possessions to her family and friends and to five enslaved women. Grace received clothing.

John Howe Peyton later purchased land from Michael Garber and Margaret (Smith) Garber that became a part of the Montgomery Hall property.
