Jane and her children were devised to John Brown Baldwin by the will of John Howe Peyton in 1847. Jane was advanced to Susan Madison Peyton by her father at the time of her marriage in 1842 at Montgomery Hall to John Brown Baldwin. Baldwin and his wife lived at Spring Farm in Augusta County, Virginia early in their marriage, later lived at “Stone House,” in Staunton, owned by her father, and later lived at “Lavoir” in Staunton.

Serena and Ellen were also advanced to Susan (Peyton) Baldwin at the time of her marriage. Ellen and Serena continued to live at “Lavoir” after the Civil War.

Aaron was also advanced to Susan Madison Peyton at the time of her marriage by her father, but Aaron was resold to him by John Brown Baldwin in 1844. Aaron was appraised in Kanawha County, Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1847, $500.00, and was sold together with William “Bill” Moore, Andrew, Alexander, Madison, Bill Cole, and Richard in 1847 to William Madison Peyton. Peyton lived in Roanoke County at “Elmwood,” now Elmwood Park in Roanoke, Virginia.

Alice Moore was sold to John Brown Baldwin by Peyton’s estate in 1856.

Baldwin owned other enslaved men, women, and children.
