Margaret Thomas Trimble

Margaret, wife of Smith Thomas, and their daughter, Susan, were sold together in late1851 to James B. Trimble, $500.00. Trimble lived in Augusta County, Virginia.

Margaret was hired out for unknown periods of time between 1848 and 1851:

1848: Hired out with her husband, Smith, and Eliza for hospital work to John B. Breckinridge, acting as agent for hire

1849: Hired out to E. Geeding

1849: Hired to work at the hospital by Samuel Woodward acting as agent for hire

1851: Hired out to James B. Trimble

Smith Thomas was sold in late 1850 to John F. J. White, a merchant in Staunton/Augusta County. Margaret and Smith Thomas had more children together after their sales. Smith’s ownership was or became a part of John F. J. White’s mercantile business and Smith was sold c. 1856/1857 to satisfy White’s debts.

Margaret Thomas later married John Trimble. They registered their marriage with the Augusta County Freedmen’s Bureau. They also registered Jenny L., 18, Frances E., 16, Mary E., 15, and Newton, 14, as their children. Mary E. Thomas was a daughter of Margaret and Smith Thomas. She died unmarried in 1874.

Margaret and John Trimble lived in Augusta County near Churchville, Virginia. After the death of John Trimble in the 1880s, Margaret left Virginia to live with one of her children.
