Mary, daughter of Eliza Ann
Mary, daughter of Eliza Ann, was born at Montgomery Hall sometime between 1853 and 1858. Eliza Ann, born c. 1837, was given to Virginia A. (Bower) Humphreys Shumate by her father, William Bower, shortly after her marriage to William J. Shumate in 1852. William Bower also gave enslaved men, women, and children to his other married children. Eliza Ann was brought from Fauquier County, Virginia to Montgomery Hall along with Jesse, born c. 1834, William Henry, and George in January, 1853.
William J. Shumate later moved to a farm in Fauquier County, Virginia and lived there until his death in 1883.
