Shedrack

 

Original Location: Monroe County, Virginia (now West Virginia)

John Howe Peyton purchased Shedrack/Shederick at the estate sale of the property of his father-in-law, John Lewis, (died June, 1823) held in Monroe County, Virginia (now West Virginia) after the February, 1824 death of his mother-in-law, Mary Preston Lewis. Shedrack/Shederick was born c. 181818 and was the son of Bill/Billey and Lucy, also owned by John Lewis. John Howe Peyton also purchased Shedrack’s sister, Clara, and his brothers, Jesse and Benjamin.

At the time of his death John Lewis owned ten enslaved African-Americans:

  • Billey/Bill, husband of Lucy, was born c.1778. He was appraised in 1823, $475.00 and was sold to William L. Lewis, son of John Lewis, $300.00.
  • Lucy, wife of Billey, was born c. 1786. She was appraised in 1823, $345.00 and was sold to James L. Woodville with her infant, $300.00. Woodville was married to Mary Lewis, daughter of John Lewis and Mary Preston Lewis.
  • Clara/Clare, daughter of Billey and Lucy, was born c. 1811. She was appraised in 1823, $312.00 and was sold to John Howe Peyton, $220.00.
  • Jesse/Jessy, son of Billey and Lucy, was born c. 1812. He was appraised in 1823, $200.00 and was sold to John Howe Peyton, $214.00.
  • Ben/Benjamin, son of Billey and Lucy, was born c. 1814. He was called Ben in the 1823 will of John Lewis, Benjamin in the August, 1824 inventory of the estate of John Lewis, and Ben at the time of his sale. He was appraised in 1823, $200.00 and was sold to John Howe Peyton, $152.00.
  • John, son of Billey and Lucy, was born c. 1816. He was appraised in 1823, $162.00 and was sold to Thomas Edgar, $185.00. Edgar lived in Monroe County.
  • Shederick/Shedrack, son of Billey and Lucy, was born c. 1818. He was called Shederick in the will of John Lewis and in the August, 1823 inventory, and called Shedrack at the time of his sale. He was appraised in 1823, $128.00 and was sold to John Howe Peyton, $155.00.
  • Norville/Granville, son of Billey and Lucy, was born c. 1820. He was called Norvil in the 1823 will of John Lewis, Norville in the 1823 inventory, and Granville at the time of the estate sale. He was appraised in 1823, $125.00 and was sold to James L. Woodwille, $131.00. His mother and infant sibling were also sold to James L. Woodville.
  • Infant, born after August, 1823, gender unknown, child of Billey and Lucy, was sold with his mother to James L. Woodville. Woodville also purchased this child’s brother.
  • Peter was mentioned in the 1823 will of John Lewis but was not mentioned in the August, 1823 inventory.
  • Harry, born c. 1780, was a blacksmith. He was appraised in 1823, $675.00 and was sold to Patrick Boyd, $462.00. Boyd was a blacksmith in Monroe County.
