Smith Thomas was appraised in 1847, $700.00. Smith was sold in 1850 to John F. J. White, $600.00. John F. J. White, a merchant, lived in Augusta County. He had formerly lived in Salem/Roanoke County, Virginia.

Smith’s wife, Margaret, and their children were also enslaved at Montgomery Hall.

Smith was hired out between 1848 and 1850:

1848: Smith was hired out for work at the hospital to John B. Breckinridge with Margaret and Eliza.

1849: Smith was hired out for four months with Henry to James B. Trimble.

1850: Smith was hired out to John B. Breckenridge acting as agent for hire for the hospital.

1856: Smith was hired out to an unknown person and to Mr. Simpson.

Smith’s ownership was or later became a part of John F. J. White’s mercantile business. Smith was sold c. 1856/1857 individually or with other enslaved individuals personally owned by White to satisfy debts owed by White and his firm.

Margaret Thomas later married John Trimble.
