John Howe Peyton's Montgomery Hall

William Henry, son of Mary

William Henry was the eldest son of Mary. Mary and an enslaved male Jesse, born c. 1834, were given to Virginia A. Bower by her father, William Bower, after her marriage to Francis Marion Humphreys in 1845. William Bower also gave enslaved men, women, and children to his other married children. F. M. Humphreys died in 1846 and his widow went to live with her father in Fauquier County, Virginia. Mary and Jesse were then hired out to work for others. Mary died shortly after the birth of her second son, George, and after her death William Henry and George lived with Humphreys and her father. William J. Shumate married Virginia A. (Bower) Hunphreys in 1852 and William Henry, George, Jesse, and Eliza Ann, an enslaved girl, born c. 1837, were brought to live at Montgomery Hall in January, 1853. George was sold to an unknown person in May or June, 1859. William Henry and Jesse were sold shortly after George’s sale

William J. Shumate later moved to a farm in Fauquier County, Virginia and lived there until his death in 1883.
