Sarah Gaskins/Jenkins
Sarah was advertised as a runaway as Sarah Gaskins in the Staunton Vindicator April 17, 1863. She ran away April 4, 1863 along with George Talbot/Taylor, Archy Gower, and Nancy Ashby. They were caught near Harrisonburg, Virginia. William J. Shumate had purchased them somewhere in the Valley of Virginia. Sarah ran away again and was called Sarah Jenkins in the Staunton and Richmond newspapers in July, 1863. She was aided in her escape by Rev. James A. Harvey, a Baptist minister from Ohio and a chaplain with the 110th Ohio Infantry.
