John Howe Peyton's Montgomery Hall

Location: Kanawha, Virginia (now West Virginia)

Aaron was advanced to Susan Madison Peyton by her father at the time of her marriage in 1842 at Montgomery Hall to John Brown Baldwin. Baldwin and his wife lived at Spring Farm in Augusta County, Virginia early in their marriage, later lived at “Stone House,” in Staunton, owned by her father, and later lived at “Lavoir” in Staunton. Aaron was resold to John Howe Peyton in 1844 by John Brown Baldwin, $500.00.

Ellen, Jane, and Serena were also advanced to Susan (Peyton) Baldwin at the time of her marriage. Ellen and Serena continued to live at “Lavoir” after the Civil War.

Alice Moore was sold to John Brown Baldwin by Peyton’s estate in 1856.

Baldwin owned other enslaved men, women, and children.

Aaron was appraised in 1847, $500.00. Aaron was sold together with William “Bill” Moore, Andrew, Alexander, Madison, Bill Cole, and Richard in 1847 to William Madison Peyton, $3325.00. Peyton lived in Staunton, Virginia, in Bath County, Virginia, in Roanoke County, Virginia at “Elmwood,” now Elmwood Park, in Roanoke, Virginia, in New York, at “Alta Vista” in Albemarle County, Virginia, and also owned property in what is now West Virginia.

Aaron, William “Bill” Moore, Andrew, Alexander, Madison, Bill Cole, and Richard were hired out together earlier in 1846/47 with J. A. Lewis acting as agent.
