Charles Anderson

Charles Anderson was born c. 1842 in Roanoke County Virginia, a son of Edmond Anderson (born c. 1810 in Bath County, Virginia, died 1887 in Washington County, Virginia) and Rosetta Lucas Anderson (born c. 1818 in Augusta County, Virginia, died in Washington County, Virginia in 1877). Charles Anderson was a carpenter, likely working at times with his father and brother, Leslie. Charles Anderson was married to a first wife, Judy, and they had Anna/Annie, born 1867 in Washington County, Virginia. Annie married Benjamin F. Bowles, a teacher born in Ohio, in 1896. They lived in Illinois. Her descendants were teachers and social workers in Missouri and Illinois. Benjamin F. Bowles remarried after her death and also had children with his second wife, Caroline.

Charles Anderson married second, Ada Singleton, a daughter of Peter Singleton and Elizabeth Callaway, in 1876. Peter Singleton, born in Chesterfield County, Virginia, and Elizabeth Callaway, born in Washington County, Virginia, registered their marriage with the Freedmen’s Bureau in Washington County, Virginia. They were both formerly owned by Wyndham Robertson. Peter Singleton was a carpenter, likely working at times with Charles, Edmond, and Leslie Anderson. Peter and Elizabeth Singleton had at least 6 children: Richard, Rhoda, Ann, Ada, James, and Leah.

Charles Anderson and Ada (Singleton) Anderson had at least 2 children:

  • Elizabeth Anderson, born c. 1877
  • Leslie Anderson, born c. 1879

Charles Anderson married his second wife, Fannie Perry, in 1887.

William Madison Peyton lived in Staunton, Virginia, in Bath County, Virginia, in Roanoke County, Virginia at “Elmwood,” now Elmwood Park, in Roanoke, Virginia, in New York, at “Alta Vista” in Albemarle County, Virginia, and also owned property in what is now West Virginia.
