Jenny Phipps

Jenny Phipps was appraised in 1847, $200.00. Jenny came to Staunton in the summer of 1809 with John Howe Peyton. Jenny had formerly lived at Stony Hill in Stafford County, Virginia. Jenny was the wife of Ned Phipps and mother of Hannah Phipps. Jenny was at Peyton’s Alleghany farm in 1823 with Ned, Andrew, George, Alexander, Nelly, Lucy, and Elvira and an unknown number of enslaved children. Jenny had some kitchen duties at Montgomery Hall. Jenny was sold together with Reuben in 1851 to Robert Asher Gray. Robert A. Gray lived at “Hilltop” in Harrisonburg/Rockingham County, Virginia. Ben Potter, Betty Potter, and Mary “Molly” Susan Potter were also sold to R. A. Gray in 1851. In March, 1861, Robert A. Gray listed six enslaved people among his assets:
