John Howe Peyton's Montgomery Hall

Nelson

Nelson, born c. 1818, was sold in March, 1863 to John B. Lavelle, a farmer in Rockbridge County, Virginia, by William J. Shumate. Nelson, then about 45, ran away not long after he was sold. Lavelle placed an advertisement for Nelson and Ezekiel, another enslaved male owned by Lavelle, that appeared in the Staunton Vindicator on June 3, 1863. Nelson had a free wife living near Staunton.
